서로 친절하게 하십시오.
아침마다 에베소서를 묵상하면서 새 사람을 입은 사람은 어떻게 살아야 하는지를 교훈 받고 있습니다. 그 중에 “서로 친절하게 하며”(엡 4:32)라는 말씀이 마음에 새겨졌습니다. 친절(Kindness)의 사전적 의미는 대하는 태도가 매우 정겹고 고분고분함, 또는 그런 태도를 말합니다. 친절은 이웃과 관계를 아름답게 만드는 필수 요소입니다. 친절은 어두웠던 마음을 환하게 하고, 냉기가 돌던 가슴에 온기를 전해 줍니다. 무더운 여름날 시원한 냉수처럼 상쾌한 마음과 기쁨을 선사합니다. 영국 속담에 “친절은 결코 헛되지 않는다.”라는 속담이 있습니다. 친절은 결국 복으로 돌아온다는 말입니다. 예수 믿는 사람답게 친절이 몸에 배어 있기를 바랍니다. 친절이 우리의 특기요, 재산목록 1호가되기를 바랍니다. 우리의 친절을 통해 예수님이 드러나기를 소원합니다.
성경 곳곳에 친절한 사례들이 기록되어 있습니다. 예수님은 자신에게 다가오는 사람들을 친절히 맞아주셨습니다. 밤늦게 찾아온 고위 관리, 대낮에 우물가에 왔던 여인, 나무 위에 앉아 있던 세리, 배고픔에 지쳐있는 무리 등 예수님은 한결같이 친절을 베풀어 주셨습니다. 시간을 내서 상담해 주시고 궁금증을 해결해 주셨습니다. 집에 가서 머물고, 배불리 먹도록 먹을 것을 주셨습니다. 예수님은 친절을 베풀 기회를 놓치지 않으셨습니다. 아브라함은 뜨거운 대낮에 나그네를 환대했는데, 그들은 하나님의 천사였습니다. 친절을 베풀지 않았다면, 결코 하나님의 음성을 들을 수 없었습니다. 요한사도는 그의 서신서를 통해 친절을 베푸는 삶을 살았던‘가이오’에 대해서 격려를 아끼지 않았습니다. 그러나 불친절한 태도를 일관했던 ‘디오드레베’는 악한 것으로 책망했습니다. 예수님처럼 일상에서 친절을 베풀며 사시기를 바랍니다.
오래전 손님으로 북적이는 식당을 간 적이 있었습니다. 음식 맛도 좋고 가격도 저렴했지만, 종업원들의 친절이 특별했었습니다. 입구에 “손님은 왕”이라고 붙여 놓고, 정말 왕처럼 손님을 접대하는 느낌이었습니다. 팁이 조금도 아깝지 않았습니다. 친절은 돈으로 바꿀 수 없는 자산입니다. 친절은 사람의 마음을 얻는 비결입니다. 미모의 아름다움은 눈만을 즐겁게 하나 친절은 영혼을 매료시킵니다. 친절을 베푸는 사람을 미워하는 사람은 없습니다. 친절한 사람은 누구에게나 친구가 됩니다. 친절한 태도를 가지고 있는 사람은 좋은 인간관계를 맺습니다. 삶의 자리에서 친절을 베풀 일이 있으면 적극 실천하십시오. 누군가를 돕거나 돌볼 일이 있을 때, 최선을 다해 도우십시오. 다른 사람에게 친절을 베푸는 것이 곧 자신을 위한 것임을 잊지 말기를 바랍니다.
친절이 우리의 대명사가 되기를 바랍니다. 예수 믿는 사람답게 친절을 생활화하시기를 바랍니다. 한 주간 만에 다시 만나는 교우들에게 친절을 베풀어 보십시오. 친절은 파급 효과가 있습니다. 친절을 베푼 사람, 친절을 받은 사람, 친절을 목격한 사람 모두에게 긍정정인 영향을 미칩니다. 하나의 친절이 더 많은 친절로 이어집니다. 우리가 베푼 친절은 반드시 우리에게 부메랑처럼 되돌아옵니다. 때로는 이자까지 붙여서 되돌아옵니다. 당장 손해를 보는 것 같아도 꾸준히 친절을 실천하십시오. 작은 미소, 따뜻한 말 한마디, 호감 어린 표정과 감사의 제스처, 작은 도움 및 나눔을 매일 선택한다면, 우리 주변은 훈훈하고 따뜻하게 바뀔 것입니다. 우리의 친절로 인해 주변이 예수님의 향기로 가득하기를 바랍니다. 천국 복음을 친절에 실어 나르는 복음의 대사들로 살기를 축복합니다.
Each morning as I meditate on Ephesians, I am learning what it means to live as one who is putting on the new self. A phrase from one of the passages became impressive to me, “Be kind to one another” (Eph. 4:32). “Kindness” is defined this way: “the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” Kindness is a requisite quality in order to forge a good relationship with one’s neighbor. It brightens a darkened heart and brings warmth to a cold spirit. It is like a cold, refreshing water on a hot day. There is a British saying, “Kindness never misses.” It means a kind act always brings back a blessing. I hope that you, a believer in Christ, has kindness in yourselves. It is our specialty, our number one inventory. I pray that Christ will be manifested by our kindness.
Kind acts are all over the Bible. Jesus welcomed all who came his way. A high ranking officer who visited him in the night, a Samaritan woman by the well, a tax-collector sitting on a tree, the masses who were weary with hunger. All these, Jesus showed kindness to without exception. He gave his time and attention to counsel them and answer their questions. He gave them food so that they may eat on their way back. Jesus never missed a chance to be kind. Abraham, also, welcomed strangers on a hot day, and they turned out to be angels of the Lord. Had he not shown that kindness, he might have missed hearing from God. The apostle John, in his epistle, commended highly Gaius for his life of hospitality. But to Diotrephes, who displayed constantly an attitude of unkindness, he only had words of condemnation. May you show kind hospitality in your life like Jesus.
Years ago I visited a restaurant that was full of customers. Not only was the food great and price low but the servers were particularly kind. A sign that said, “Customer is always right” was posted on the top of the entrance, and the establishment lived up to its sign. No amount of tipping felt excessive. Kindness is truly an incalculable asset. It wins the heart. Outer beauty can only please the beholder’s eyes but kindness attracts deeply the heart. No one can hate a kind person. Kindness befriends all. A kind person cannot fail to have great relationships. So whenever you have the opportunity, exercise kindness. When you have the chance to serve someone, give it your very best. Never forget that an act of kindness is ultimately a service to oneself.
I pray that kindness would be our hallmark. It is fitting for a believer to be kind as a lifestyle. Be kind to your fellow brother/sister whom you greet once a week. Kindness has a collateral effect. It has a positive impact on the giver as well as the receiver, and the spectator. One act of kindness leads to a multiple. Like a boomerang, our kind actions return to us in same manner. Sometimes it returns with an interest. Practice kindness, even when it feels like loss at the moment. A simple smile, a word, a winsome gesture, a helping hand, etc. Should you choose to do these daily, you will find your surrounding being filled with warmth and gladness. I pray that by our acts of kindness our surrounding will be filled with the aroma of Christ. I pray you will be Gospel ambassadors who enact the Gospel by your kindness.
