러시아, 우크라이나 전쟁이 채 마무리되지 않은 상황에서 중동 지역에서 또 전쟁이 일어났습니다. 팔레스타인과 이스라엘 간의 전쟁으로 희생자들이 계속 늘어나고 있습니다. 전쟁이 주변으로 확산되지 않을까 하는 우려로 전 세계가 촉각을 곤두세우고 있습니다. 정치, 과학, 기술 등은 우리에게 유토피아를 약속했습니다. 그러나 세상은 점점 악해져 갑니다. 주변에서 들려오는 소식은 그저 암울하기만 합니다. 가짜에 소망을 두고 살았었음을 통감합니다. 절망의 늪에 빠진 인류에게 희망이 있습니다. 진짜 소망, 참 소망이 되시는 예수님이 계시기 때문입니다. 인류 역사를 돌아보면, 암흑의 때에 기독교는 더욱 번성했습니다. 오직 예수님만 세상의 참 소망이 되시기 때문입니다. 어려울 때 일수록, 참 소망되신 예수님을 더욱 의지하시기 바랍니다.
소망은 어두운 인생길을 환하게 밝히는 한 줄기 빛입니다. 우리의 삶에는 소망이 필요합니다. 성경은 예수님을 우리의 산 소망(Living Hope)이라고 말씀합니다. 참 소망은 능력이 있어야 합니다. 부활이 있어야 합니다. 영생이 있어야 합니다. 하나님은 예수님을 죽은 자 가운데서 부활하게 하심으로 우리를 거듭나게 하사 산 소망이 있게 하셨습니다. (베드로전서 1:3) 예수님은 죽음의 권세를 물리치신 구원의 산 소망이십니다. 어두운 세상에 빛을 주시는 산 소망이십니다. 모든 결박에서 우리를 자유롭게 하시는 산 소망이십니다. 고난의 한가운데서도 기뻐할 수 있는 산 소망이십니다. 깨어진 관계를 회복시키시는 산 소망이십니다. 누구든지 산 소망이 되는 예수님을 믿으면 그 인생이 바뀝니다. 소망 없는 인생에서 소망 있는 인생으로 변화됩니다. 인생 역전, 인생 대박은 오직 예수님 안에 있습니다.
예수님은 “내가 곧 길이요 진리요 생명이니 나로 말미암지 않고는 아버지께로 올 자가 없느니라”(요한복음 14:6)라고 말씀하셨습니다. 길 없이 갈 수 없고, 진리 없이 알 수 없고, 생명 없이 살 수 없습니다. 예수님은 우리가 따라야 할 길이요, 믿어야 할 진리이며, 바라야 할 생명입니다. 예수님은 가장 바른 길이고, 잘못될 수 없는 진리이며, 참된 삶, 복된 삶을 주시는 영원한 생명입니다. 예수님을 통해서만 우리는 하나님께 이를 수 있습니다. 종교개혁자 캘빈은 “길이란 시작을 의미하는 것이요, 진리란 과정을 의미하는 것이며, 생명은 그 결과로서의 종착점을 의미하는 것이다.”라고 말했습니다. 예수님이라는 길을 통해 바른길을 가게 되면 반드시 진리에 이르게 되고, 예수님이라는 진리를 통해 나아가면 반드시 생명에 이르고 영생에 이른다는 것입니다. 그래서 예수님은 우리의 시작과 끝, 참 소망이 되십니다.
다윗은 "주여 이제 내가 무엇을 바라리요 나의 소망은 주께 있나이다" (시편 39:7)라고 고백했습니다. 찬송가 488장 1절은“이 몸의 소망 무언가 우리 주 예수뿐일세 우리 주 예수 밖에는 믿을 이 아주 없도다”라고 노래합니다. 예수님이 소망입니다. 예수님께 소망의 닻을 내리십시오. 예수님과 함께 인생 방황의 종지부를 찍으십시오. 어두운 인생길에 한 줄기 소망의 빛을 비춰주시는 예수님을 만나십시오. 예수님을 만나면 상황과 환경에 관계없이 마음에 소망이 생깁니다. 절대 절망이 절대 소망으로 바뀝니다. 죽음을 두려워하던 사람이 영생의 소망을 가진 사람으로 변화됩니다. 예수님만이 우리의 참 소망입니다. 예수님을 영접하고 참 소망을 누리며 살기를 축복합니다.
A new war is waging on in Middle East, while Russia-Ukraine war is still ongoing. Casualties are increasing in the fight between Palestine and Israel. The entire world is holding their breaths as they watch anxiously, wondering whether the conflict will spread to neighboring countries. Advancement of technology, science, and politics promised Utopia. But in reality the world is growing darker and darker. News that reach us from all around do nothing but depress us. Every one admits we have been putting our hopes in wrong places. But to humanity that is deep in the mire of hopelessness there is hope. True hope. Jesus Christ. When you study history, you discover Christianity always thrived during dark times. That is because Jesus is the true hope of this world. The harder life gets, I pray you depend on Jesus, who is our one true hope.
Hope is like a ray of light, cast on the dark path of life. Our lives need hope. The Bible calls Jesus our “living hope.” True hope must have power, resurrection, eternal life. God raised Jesus from the dead and raised us along with him, granting us living hope (1 Peter 1:3). Jesus is the living hope who defeated the power of death. He is the living hope that gives light in this darkened world. He is the living hope that frees us from all chains. He is the living hope that gives joy amid great pain. He is the living hope that restores broken relationships. Anyone who believes in Jesus who is the living hope, his life will turn around from a life without hope to one full of it. Turning point in a life is with Jesus alone.
Jesus said, “I am the way , the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6 NIV). Without the way, no one can move forward; without the truth there is no knowledge; without life, there is no living. Jesus is the way we must walk upon. He is the truth we must believe. He is the life we must desire. He is the most straight path, the infallible truth, and the truest, the most blessed, eternal life. Only through Jesus can we come to God. One of the reformers, Calvin, said, “’Way’ means a start. ‘Truth’ means a process. ‘Life’ means the destination to that process.” Anyone who travels on the path call ‘Jesus,’ walks straight, arrives at truth, and finally arrives at life, even eternal life. In this way, Jesus is the beginning, the end, our living hope.
In Psalm 39:7, David said, “But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” The hymnal “On Christ the Solid Rock”, in its first verse, says, “My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness.” The name of Jesus is hope! Lower your anchor in him! Put an end to your wandering by the hope that Jesus gives. Come to him and find a light thrown on the darkened path of your life. When you come to him, you find hope, regardless of your circumstances. Absolute despair turns into absolute hope. He who once feared death enjoys hope of eternal life. Jesus alone is our true hope. May you receive Jesus into your life and experience true hope.
