기도해 주셔서 제자훈련 세미나를 잘 다녀왔습니다. 이번 제자훈련 세미나는 미국, 캐나다 지역의 이민 교회를 섬기시는 목회자 부부를 대상으로 한 세미나였습니다. 참석자들 대부분이 작은 교회를 섬기고 있어서 더욱 의미가 있었습니다. 제자훈련 세미나는 다시 한번 교회의 존재 이유, 사명, 목회자의 소명에 대해 깨닫는 귀한 시간이었습니다. 건강한 교회를 향한 열망이 더욱 강렬해지는 시간이었습니다. 아울러 저와 우리 교회가 나가는 길이 바르다는 것을 확증하는 시간이어서 감사했습니다. 힘들어도 전도하고 제자 삼는 사역을 지속해야 함을 결단하게 하신 하나님께 감사를 드립니다. 세미나 기간에 나무를 참 많이 보았습니다. 세미나 장소인 미국 교회와 숙소 주변에 형형색색의 나무들이 많이 있었습니다. 나무들을 보면서 깨달은 점을 같이 나누고 싶습니다.
나무들은 자리를 잘 지키고 있었습니다. 비가 오나 눈이 오나 나무들은 한결같이 자기 자리를 지키고 있었습니다. 나무들은 힘들다고 자리를 떠나지 않았습니다. 척박한 땅이든, 기름진 땅이든 한번 자리를 잡으면, 그곳을 평생 터전으로 생각하는 나무들이 대단하다는 생각이 들었습니다. 더 좋은 곳이 분명히 있었을 텐데, 자리를 옮기고 싶은 유혹도 강렬했을 텐데, 잡은 자리를 버티고 지키는 비결은 무엇인지를 묻고 싶었습니다. 나무들은 힘들어도, 고독해도, 상황과 환경이 좋지 않아도 자기 자리를 지키고 있었습니다. 고집스럽게 자리를 지키는 나무를 보며 도전을 받았습니다. 나무처럼 하나님이 정해 주신 자리를 잘 지켜야겠다는 것입니다. 나를 가장 잘 아시는 하나님이 내게 정해주신 자리를 나무처럼 잘 지키다가 주님을 맞이하고 싶습니다.
나무들은 세상에 많은 유익을 주고 있었습니다. 사람에게는 볼거리, 먹을거리를 제공하고, 동물에게는 먹을거리와 쉴 거리를 제공해 주었습니다. 또 온몸으로 따사로운 햇살을 가로막아 사람에게 시원한 그늘을 제공해 주었습니다. 나무는 홍수를 조절하고 산사태를 방지해 줍니다. 맑은 공기, 마실 물을 적절히 공급하는 임무를 수행합니다. 새들에게는 보금자리를 마련해 주고, 동물들에게는 피난처를 제공해 줍니다. 평생을 그렇게 세상에 유익을 주다가 마지막에는 자신을 완전히 불사릅니다. 집을 짓고, 다리를 만들고, 각종 도구를 만드는데 드려집니다. 그렇지 않으면 땔감으로 세상을 따뜻하게 만들어 줍니다. 나무는 아낌없이 주는 삶을 살고 있었습니다. 나무처럼 그렇게 살고 싶습니다. 세상에 유익을 주는 사람으로 살다가 주님 앞에 서고 싶습니다.
나무들은 주변을 아름답게 만들어 주고 있었습니다. 산과 들에 나무가 없다면 얼마나 삭막할지를 생각해 보았습니다. 산과 들이 아름다운 것은 나무들이 있기 때문이라는 생각이 들었습니다. 나무들이 철을 따라 고운 옷을 갈아입기 때문에 세상이 이처럼 매력적이라는 생각을 했습니다. 나무들은 봄이면 녹색, 여름이면 진녹색, 가을이면 빨강, 노랑, 자주 등으로 옷을 갈아입습니다. 겨울이 되면 옷을 벗어 자신을 받아준 땅에 이불을 덮어줍니다. 나무들이 때마다 산과 들을 아름답게 색칠해주기 때문에 세상에 활력이 넘친다고 생각했습니다. 나무처럼 자리를 잘 지키며, 세상에 유익을 주는 사람으로 살고 싶습니다. 세상을 아름답게 만드는 일에 작으나마 기여하고 싶습니다. 말없이 가르침을 전해준 나무들로 인해 하나님께 감사를 올려드립니다.
Thanks to you prayers, I am safely back from the Discipleship Training Seminar. This seminar was for the pastors and their wives who are serving the immigrant churches of US and Canada. Many of the pastors who had come were ministering in small to medium size churches, which added a layer of intimacy and significance to the event. The seminar was a time of refreshing our understanding of why the church exists and what the calling of the pastor is. It reinforced our longing for a healthy church. Also, it affirmed my conviction that our church is headed in the right direction. Difficult as it is, I am thankful to God that he gives us the resolve to continue the effort in evangelism and discipleship. During the seminar, I observed many trees. The location—an American church and the place of lodging—was surrounded by trees of many shapes and colors. I would like to share some of my insights from observing them.
Trees stay where they are. Rain or shine, trees stand their ground invariably. None of them leave their place because they don’t like it. Whether the ground is dry or lush, once they are planted, they consider it their home for life. Amazing commitment! Surely there must be a better location for them. Surely they feel tempted to move. I wanted to ask them, if I could, what their secret was in staying their post so firmly. Trees endure loneliness and harshness, bad conditions and circumstances. I was challenged by their stubborn commitment to stay in their place. Like them, I want to stay my post well. I desire to stay there until he returns, knowing that God who knows me best placed me there.
Trees also provide many benefits to the world. They provide beautiful sights for people, fruits to consume, and shelter for the animals. With their bodies, they block the sun and provide cool shades. They collectively prevent floods and mitigate landslides. They cleanse the air and allocate streams of water. They provide nests for the birds and refuges for preys. They live their whole lives serving the world and in the end give themselves up entirely for various uses. Their bodies are used to build houses, bridges, many a furniture. If not for these uses, then they give themselves as fuel. I wish to be like them: to be completely given up for the benefit of others until Jesus returns.
Trees also make the world a beautiful place. I imagined a world without trees. How bare would mountains and forests be! Mountains and hills are wonderful to look at because of the individual trees that cover them. By the seasons, trees dress themselves with fine colors, making the world look the way it does. When spring comes, they are green. In summer times, deeper shade of green. In fall, red, yellow, violet. Come winter, they undress and place their coats on the floor as nourishment for the earth. I thought of how vivid and lively this world is because of the trees that color the hills. Like them, I desire to be faithful in my place, being useful to the world. I would like to contribute to making beautiful my surrounding. I thank God for giving me these lessons without speaking a single word through the trees.
