지난주가 한국의 추석이었습니다. 성도님 한 분이 송편을 주셔서 어린 시절의 추석을 추억할 수 있었습니다. 송편을 먹다가 아내가 양로병원에 누워 계신 권사님을 떠올렸습니다. 권사님이 양로병원에 들어가시기 전에 몇 번 떡을 주셨기 때문입니다. 떡을 얻어먹은 일이 생각나서 송편을 갖고 양로병원을 방문했습니다. 혹시라도 송편이 목에 걸리면 안 되기에 먼저 담당 간호사의 허락을 받았습니다. 누워계신 권사님께 송편을 드렸는데‘정말 맛있다’며 2개를 꼭꼭 씹어서 맛있게 드셨습니다. 너무 행복해 하시는 모습을 보며 심방을 잘했다는 생각을 했습니다. 권사님은 잊지 않고 찾아와 줘서 감사하다며 생의 의욕이 넘치셨습니다. 힘들 때 찾아와 위로해 주고 격려해 주는 친구가 있다면, 우리는 다시 삶의 의욕을 불태울 수 있습니다.
정치를 하겠다던 꿈 많은 청년이 있었습니다. 그는 스케이팅, 테니스, 골프, 승마, 수영 등 운동에도 뛰어난 소질이 있었습니다. 스물다섯 살의 어느 날, 청년의 몸에 마비가 찾아왔습니다. 척수성 소아마비로 인해 청년은 다른 사람의 도움을 받아야 만 살 수 있게 되었습니다. 극도로 절망했던 청년은 말도 제대로 하지 못한 채, 심한 우울증에 시달렸습니다. 그러나 청년에게는 어려울 때 함께 했던 친구들이 있었습니다. 친구들이 청년의 곁을 지키며 용기를 불어넣어 주었고, 손과 발이 되어 주었습니다. 청년은 “친구들, 여하튼 해 봅시다.” 라며, 생의 의욕을 포기하지 않았습니다. 마침내 그는 장애를 극복하고 인류 역사에 한 획을 긋는 위대한 인물이 되었습니다. 미국 제32대 대통령이며, 미국 역사상 4번이나 대통령을 지낸 프랭클린 루스벨트(Franklin Roosevelt)대통령 이야기입니다.
성경에도 비슷한 내용이 있습니다. 마가복음 2장에 보면, 중풍병자와 친구들 이야기가 나옵니다. 중풍병자는 몸을 움직이지도 못하고 가눌 수 없었습니다. 극도의 절망 가운데 있었지만, 그에게는 좋은 친구들이 있었습니다. 어느 날, 친구들이 그를 예수님 앞으로 데리고 갔습니다. 친구들은 예수님과의 만남을 위해 지붕을 뚫는 엄청난 희생을 치렀습니다. 예수님과의 만남으로 중풍병자는 대박을 맞았습니다. 일어나 걸었고, 구원 받는 은혜도 누리게 되었습니다. 우리 주변에는 육체적인 질병 뿐 아니라 영적인 중풍 병에 걸려 고통 하는 사람들이 많습니다. 이들은 예수님을 만나서 치료를 받아야 할 사람들입니다. 우리 곁의 고통당하는 이웃들에게 좋은 친구가 되어주시기를 바랍니다. 네 명의 친구들처럼, 힘을 모아 고통 하는 이웃들을 예수님 앞으로 데리고 오시기를 바랍니다. 인생의 진정한 성공은 예수님과의 만남에 있습니다.
새생명 축제가 20여일 앞으로 다가왔습니다. 이번 주에는 태신자들을 꼭 찾아가 만나주시길 바랍니다. 선물도 전해 주시고, 식사도 같이 하면 좋겠습니다. 태신자들에게 사랑과 관심을 보여 주시길 바랍니다. 한 영혼이 천하보다 귀합니다. 한 영혼을 예수님 앞으로 인도하기 위해 기꺼이 대가를 치르면 좋겠습니다. 태신자를 위해 기도하면 하나님이 창조적인 아이디어를 주십니다. 남은 기간 동안 믿음으로 지붕을 뚫는 일을 하시길 바랍니다. 먼저 태신자들의 좋은 친구가 되어 주십시오. 하나님은 우리의 전도를 통해서 믿는 자들을 구원하기를 기뻐하십니다. 새생명 축제를 위해 사랑을 실천하는 가운데 많은 사람이 구원 받는 역사를 보기를 축복합니다.
Last week Korea celebrated its own Thanksgiving. One of the members sent me some rice cakes that brought back some nostalgic memories. While having some of the cakes, my wife remembered a deaconess who was hospitalized—she had given us some cakes before enrolling into the convalescence. With the memory still in mind, I took some rice cakes and visited the convalescence. I checked with the nurse that she was able to swallow the cake without any problem. She took two cakes and ate them, saying, “It’s so good!” Seeing how glad she was I was pleased to know my visit was worthwhile. The deaconess thanked me for remembering her and she was revitalized. Wouldn’t we be revived when we’re distressed if we had a friend who would come by our side to comfort and encourage us?
There was a young, ambitious man whose dream was to enter politics. He had many talents: skating, tennis, golf, horseback riding, swimming, etc. But the year he turned twenty-five, a paralysis took over his body. It was spinal polio; he would need to depend on others for the rest of his life. Driven to extreme despair, the young man all but lost his speech and suffered severe depression. But he had friends with him in times of need. Those friends came around the young man and gave him courage. They became his hands and feet. He recovered his will to live and told them, “Friends, let’s do this!” In the end, he overcame his disability and became one of the most influential person in history. This is the story of the 32nd president of the United States, the only president to be in office for four terms, Franklin Roosevelt.
There is a similar story in the Bible. In the second chapter of Mark, we find a story of a paralyzed man and his friends. The man was completely paralyzed, immobile. Though he was in a desperate circumstance, he had good men for friends. One day, those men brought him before Jesus. They risked much to tear a hole in another man’s house to make this happen. As a result, the paralytic landed the greatest jackpot of his life. He was made to walk again, and received eternal life as a gift. There are many around us who suffer not just from physical ailment but from spiritual ones. May you be a true friend to those around you who suffer likewise. Like those four friends, may you work together to bring the paralyzed before Jesus. Remember: true success in life consists of encounter with Him.
The New Life Festival is approximately twenty days ahead of us. I urge you to visit the people you decided to invite. Deliver them presents. Eat with them. Show them love and attention. One soul is more valuable than the whole world! What price is too high in bringing that soul before Christ? When we are prepared to pay the cost, God gives us creativity. Spend the next few weeks in faith “tearing a hole on the roof.” Begin by being a true friend to them. God delights in delivering the souls we evangelize. I pray you will witness many souls being delivered through your friendship during the New Life Festival.
