이번 주에 두 분의 소천 소식을 들었습니다. 한 분은 제가 은행에서 근무할 때, 도움을 주셨던 장로님입니다. 우연히 인터넷 신문의 부고를 보고 소식을 듣게 되어 한국으로 급히 조화를 보냈습니다. 미국에 온 이후, 전화로 몇 번 연락했었는데 이제는 천국에서 뵈어야 할 것 같습니다. 또 한 분은 케냐에서 선교하셨던 이원철 선교사님입니다. 선교사님은 단톡방에 같이 묶여 있어서 소식을 계속 전해 들었습니다. 선교사님은 학원에서 잘나가는 강사로 살다가 파송교회도 없이 케냐에 선교사로 들어갔습니다. 대도시에서 12시간 걸리는 빈민촌에 가서 빈민들을 대상으로 기독교 학교를 운영하며 그곳에서 복음을 전했습니다. 선교사님은 무슬림들이 암살하려고 현상금을 내거는 상황에서도 포기하지 않고 26년간 선교활동을 계속하셨습니다.
얼마 전 선교사님은 60세를 넘기셨습니다. 선교사로서 한참 일할 나이인데, 갑자기 말라리아와 장티푸스가 찾아왔습니다. 몸이 천근만근인데도 기다리는 성도들을 위해 교회를 방문해서 말씀을 전하고 돌아와 병원에 입원했습니다. 그렇게 마지막 순간까지 최선으로 주의 일을 감당하다가 하나님의 부름을 받으셨습니다. 선교사님은 평소 "할 일이 너무 많아 하루가 소중하다."고 하셨습니다. 또 “한 알의 밀알이 되기를 원한다.”고 하셨습니다. 소원대로 아프리카 케냐의 빈민촌에 한 알의 밀알이 되셨습니다. 지난주에 일단 수혈을 받고 한국에 들어가 시간이 걸리더라도 치료받고 온다는 메시지를 남기셨는데, 갑자기 하나님의 부름을 받았습니다. 하나님이 선교사님을 곁에 두기를 원하셨던 것 같습니다. 하나님을 사랑하고 예수님의 발자취를 따라 살기를 원했던 선교사님에게 하나님께서 큰 상급을 주실 줄 믿습니다.
성경의 핵심은 천국과 지옥입니다. 성경은 계속해서 천국을 강조합니다. 무신론자들은 천국을 인간의 발명품 정도로 여깁니다. 불교는 무념무상, 열반의 상태가 천국이라고 주장합니다. 이슬람교의 천국은 관능의 극치입니다. 술의 강이 있고, 아름다운 여성들이 최고의 서비스로 수종을 드는 곳이라고 합니다. 성경이 말하는 천국의 특징은 하나님의 영광이 있습니다. 하나님의 보좌가 있고, 말로 설명할 수 없는 영광과 이에 대한 찬양이 있습니다. 하나님 앞에 선 인간, 하나님의 의로운 심판, 믿음을 지킨 성도들의 영원한 승리와 축복을 이야기 합니다. C. S. 루이스는 “천국을 지향하면 세상을 덤으로 얻을 것이다. 그러나 세상을 지향하면 둘 다 잃을 것이다.”라고 했습니다. 이 세상에 천국 외에 우리 마음을 진정으로 둘 만한 가치 있는 것은 없습니다. 천국을 생각하고, 천국에 관심을 갖고, 천국을 갈망하며 사시기를 바랍니다.
두 분의 소천 소식이 남의 일처럼 여겨지지 않습니다. 주님 앞에 설날이 심히 가깝다는 생각이 듭니다. 우리는 곧 주님 앞에 서게 됩니다. 주님 앞에서 우리의 행한 대로 주님께 받게 됩니다. 주님 앞에 서는 날, 주님으로부터 칭찬과 인정을 받기를 소원합니다. 우리의 최종 목적지는 하늘나라입니다. 천국은 우리의 소망이며 신앙생활의 목적입니다. 우리의 영원한 고향은 천국입니다. 이 세상은 잠시 통과하는 곳입니다. 우리의 소중한 자원을 천국에 투자하시길 바랍니다. 이생을 위해서는 계산기를 잘 두드리면서, 영원을 위해서는 인색하지 않기를 바랍니다. 이 땅을 사는 동안 천국을 잘 준비하다가, 하나님이 부르시는 날에 천국에서 영원을 보내기를 축복합니다.
This week, I heard a news of the passing of two men. One of them was an elder I helped me while I was working as a banker in Korea. Upon hearing the news through a random internet article, I immediately sent flowers to express my condescended. He was someone I kept in touch after I immigrated to the States; now I must wait until I see him in heaven.
Another person is Missionary Lee, Won Chul, who ministered in Kenya. Won Chul was in the chatroom I was part of and that is where I heard the news about his passing. He used to do well for himself as a lecturer in an afterschool program, but upon hearing God’s call, he left it all behind, and without a sending church, went to Kenya as a missionary. He went to a poor village some 12 hours away from the nearest big city and founded a Bible College for the villagers, spreading the Gospel. He endured through the persecution from Muslim headhunters and never gave up his post for the last 26 years.
Not long ago, Won Chul celebrated his 60th birthday. He was in his golden years as a missionary until, suddenly, Malaria and Typhoid met him. Despite these, he pushed his weary body to visit his people in the church and gave them the Word. Only after he was done he would enroll in the hospital. And like that, until his final moment when the Lord called him home, he gave his very best. Missionary Lee would often say, “Each day is so precious, having much to do.” And, “All I want to be is a kernel of wheat.” And true to his wishes, he became the kernel that fell in the small, poor village in Kenya. Only last week, he left the message that he would go to Korea for his treatment, though it would consume precious time. But the Lord called him home before that. I believe God desired Missionary Lee for himself, to have him by his side sooner. And without a doubt, I believe God would reward a man such has Won Chul for his love for Christ and his endeavor to follow His footsteps.
The main focus of the Bible is heaven and hell. It constantly points us to heaven. Atheists regard it as a wistful invention of man. Buddhists claim that heaven is the absence of thought and want, the ultimate state of enlightment, better known as Nirvana. Islam’s heaven is the place of utmost hedonism where rivers run with wine and beautiful women satisfy your every fancy. But according to the Bible, heaven is characterized by God’s own glory. It is where God’s throne is and praise of his inextricable glory never ceases. The Bible speaks of man standing before God, of God’s righteous judgment, and of the victories and blessings of the saints who kept their faith.
CS Lewis once said, “Aim and Heaven, and you get Earth thrown in. Aim at Earth, and you will lose both.” This world has nothing to offer us that is worth a moment of our heart’s longing besides heaven. May we think of it often, care for it deeply, and long after it desperately.
It is impossible to think of their passing as some distant affair. It reminds me of the fact that the day we will stand before God is approaching fast; and we will stand before him soon. When we do, we will receive each for whatever we have done. I desire that you will receive from him praise and acknowledgement.
Never forget that our final destination is heaven and that we live as pilgrims in this world. May we invest our precious resources into that destination. May we never be experts in earthly businesses while being miserly toward eternity. May we rather busy ourselves preparing for heaven, and when finally the Lord calls us home, spend eternity in heaven’s joys.
